Filip Schutyser has obtained a Master Degree in Electrotechnical Engineering at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in 1997. In August 1997, he joined the research group Medical Image Computing (faculties of engineering sciences and medicine) at the same university. His research work focuses on methodologies to optimize surgery in the context of 3D image-based environments in the field of oto-rhino-laryngology, oral surgery, and maxillofacial surgery. In November 2002, he co-founded of MEDICIM NV, a spin-off company of K.U.Leuven. Since its creation, Mr. Schutyser has been the CEO of MEDICIM. He was awarded the Belgian Price for Dentomaxillofacial Imaging on April 1 2004, for his research. He is co-author of over 29 peer-reviewed journal papers, co-author of the book Three-Dimensional Cephalometry (Springer), co-author of a book chapter in the book Distraction Osteogenesis of the Facial Skeleton (Becker), and he holds several patents.
