Dr. Schmelzeisen graduated with his MD from Johannes-Gutenberg-University Mainz in 1983. From 1983 to 1984, he attended the Military Hospital and University Clinic, Ulm, for cranio-maxillofacial surgery. In 1985, he received his DDS in bone grafting. Dr, Schmelziesen has been a visiting surgeon in cranio-maxillofacial surgery clinics in Beijing, Tokyo, and Djakarta. From 1985 to 1996, he was a cranio-maxillofacial trainer at the Medical University, Hanover. Since 1997, Dr. Schmelzeisen has been professor and chairman Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical University, Freiburg. From 2005 to 2007, he was chairman of the German Association of Skull Base Surgery. Dr. Schmelzeisen has been awarded: the Annual award of the German Association for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1992), the Hans-Pichler-Award of the Austrian Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1995), and the Rudolf-Schoen-Award of the Society of Friends of the Medical University Clinic Hanover (1996)
